Posted: October 5, 2023
With a strategy for healthy partnerships based on collaborative problem-solving and open communication, the annual cook-off presents an ideal opportunity for the Gilmore team to celebrate customer successes, connect with partners, and network with players in this evolving landscape. In addition, the event offered a chance to support local charities and enjoy authentic Texas barbecue! Here’s what this year’s cook-off entailed.
Sixth Annual Daniel Energy Partners Permian Basin BBQ Cook-Off
Dedicated to the development of the Permian Basin, the annual Daniel Energy Partners BBQ Cook-Off is an exclusive, invitation-only event for energy industry professionals. This year marked the sixth annual event.
The cook-off offers a key opportunity to drive industry improvements by fostering strategic partnerships and collaboration between public and private energy companies, service providers, finance professionals, and influential energy investors. The event has grown enormously over the years: from nearly 300 guests in 2017 to 5,000 attendees in 2023! So, how did it all start?
John Daniel—founder of Daniel Energy Partners—put together the first Permian Basin Cook-off in 2017. His goal was to create a networking platform for his expansive network of energy executives and out-of-state investors. What better way to connect people than through food?
John hosted the 2017 event with the help of Armada Pressure Control, cooking for nearly 300 guests. It was a resounding success—leading to the establishment of the annual Permian Basin Cook-Off, officially endorsed by the Kansas City Barbeque Society.
Since then, the event has evolved into a massive barbecue competition supporting a range of West Texas charities—and a premier networking occasion. By 2019, it had expanded to feature 42 cooking teams and 1,600 attendees.
In 2020, Daniel Energy Partners launched, and John took on the role of cook-off host, with continued support from Piper Sandler. Unfortunately, that year’s event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The team, however, remained determined to revive it as soon as possible. And by 2021, they were back—with a whopping 58 cook teams and 1,775 attendees.
2023: The Biggest Year Yet
This year’s invite-only event featured approximately 100 oilfield cooking teams. Other attendees included DEP subscribers, sponsors, exploration and production (E&P) operators, midstream operators, investors, and qualified C-suite industry executives. The cook teams put their skills into action at the Scharbauer Sports Complex in Midland, Texas for a $50,000 donation to the charity of their choice.
Gilmore’s Star Team for 2023
Besides showcasing our flow control valve expertise for drilling and oilfield services, Gilmore also competed as a backyard cooking team. Gilmore’s pit master’s for this year included CTO Ryan Bludau and Engineering Manager, Chris Barnes that volunteered a sleepless night to slow smoke and produce a tasty brisket and rack of ribs for the judges.
